Preventing amputation

Most amputations worldwide are caused by diabetes and poor circulation, and many of them can be prevented. Daily foot care and acting fast on small problems saves limbs.

Diabetes can damage the nerves and blood vessels in the feet. People may not feel a small cut, blister or burn, and poor circulation means it heals slowly. A minor wound can become an ulcer, then an infection, and sometimes an amputation.

Health organisations estimate that up to 85% of diabetes-related amputations could be prevented if foot problems were found early and treated properly. Around the world, a limb is lost to diabetes every 20 to 30 seconds.
